How To Create A Life Plan

December 8, 2022

Creating a plan for your life can be an exhausting process. However, the end result is worth it. Writing a life plan forces you to think critically about your time on this earth, your goals and aspirations, and what you want your legacy to be. If you’re not sure where to begin with your life plan or want to take things up a notch, check out our article on the benefits of writing one in the first place.

Identify Your Biggest Dreams

The first step in creating your life plan is identifying your biggest dreams. What do you want to experience the most before the end of your life? What are the goals that give you the most energy and passion? Having a list of dreams like this will help you figure out how to prioritize and ensure that your time and energy are spent on things that will impact your life. It can be helpful to think about this in terms of what you want to leave behind. What do you want to be remembered for? How do you want to be known in your community and among your loved ones?

Know Your “Why”

Knowing your “why” or purpose is essential to keeping you on track and letting you know when you’re off the path and need to get back on it. This is the reason you’re doing what you’re doing. Once you know your “why”, you can use it to keep yourself from getting distracted by all of the other shiny objects that will inevitably grab your attention as you go about your day-to-day life. It will keep you from getting hung up on the details and instead keep you focused on how your achievements will move you toward your goals.

Decide on a Legacy

What is your legacy? Creating a life plan isn’t just about living in the moment. It’s also about being mindful of the future. If you die tomorrow, what do you want your legacy to be?

  • What do you want to leave behind?
  • What do you want people to say about you when you’re gone?
  • What do you want your children and grandchildren to remember you for?
  • What do you want to be remembered for?
  • What do you want to contribute to the world?
  • What do you want to be known for?

Knowing the answers to these questions will help you decide what types of goals you need to set for yourself. For example, if you want to leave behind a certain amount of money for your loved ones, then you need to set financial goals. If you want to be known for your contributions to society, then you need to set goals that will get you there.

A life plan is a great way to stay focused on achieving your goals. It helps you take a step back and look at your life as a whole. It will let you know what you need to do to reach your goals and how much time you have to get there. You’re likely to experience setbacks during the course of your life. It’s part of being human. When things don’t go according to plan, don’t lose focus. Instead, use that as motivation to get back to work. You can’t control what happens in life, but you can control how you respond to it. Writing a life plan can be exhausting, but it’s worth it.
